Welcome to Tree Branches Genealogy!

Genealogy is a lifelong passion which began over 40 years ago when I found a family tree that my maternal grandmother had drawn on a piece of paper along with her typed ancestral lineage. Gaining family history first hand is preferable, but it is not always possible. Additionally, memory of dates and places fade with time. And as i found out, some “memories” are embellishments at best, such as the family “story” that my great-great grandmother was a countess.

Thus, gaining an accurate picture of your family history involves finding birth, marriage, and death records, censuses, immigration and military records to name a few. Within the past 20 years, as the interest in genealogy has grown, many countries have digitized or are in the process of ditigizing their historic records. Tens of thousands of new records are added to online databases monthly.

Records need to be searched, vetted and verified to ensure that the correct records are associated with the correct ancestor. Many of our ancestors used the same names over and over which can make research like a pile of yarn that needs to be sorted into strands and then rolled up into the correct ancestor’s profile. It can be tedious but teasing out the facts is extremely rewarding.

Genealogy is also an exciting collaborative endeavor through which I have “found” extended family and friends. The knowledge gained about my ancestors in addition to visiting most of their hometowns has truly been an amazing journey.
